Surgical Options

In cases of urinary incontinence where personal behavior changes, physical therapy or medications are not effective methods of treatment, your physician may decide that surgery is necessary. Depending on the cause of incontinence, these can include:

• urethral inserts for occasional stress incontinence;
• bulking agents to prevent urine leakage;
• a suburethral (minimally invasive) sling;
• Burch or MMK operations to restore the urethra and bladder to
  their normal position behind the pubic bone;
• pubovaginal facial sling, either the autologous or cadaveric type,
  which attaches a piece of flat tendon-like material around the
  bladder neck to keep urine in;
• artificial urinary sphincter for men with incontinence;
• bladder pacemaker;
• pessary insertion;
• enlarging the bladder; or
• endoscopy and laparoscopic surgery for removal of obstructions.
