How Is Urinary Incontinence Diagnosed?

After a complete physical exam and medical history are completed, tests such as urinalysis, blood tests and a void diary, as well as urodynamic testing, are done to identify the type and underlying causes of incontinence.

Urodynamic testing is a group of tests that help to evaluate the way your bladder functions and precisely what the problem is. It may involve imaging equipment that films urination, or it may be as simple as urinating to measure urine volume and velocity.

These tests include a stress test, pressure profile measurement, uroflowmeter, pelvic ultrasound, voiding cystourethrogram, electromyography, cystoscopy, a CT scan and MRI testing.

Urodynamic tests evaluate how well your bladder and sphincter muscles work and can help explain your symptoms and determine the proper treatment.
