New Treatment Options, Surgical Procedures and Technology

Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (ACI)
Articular cartilage, the cartilage that covers the ends of the bones, can often be damaged creating lesions within. ACI is a relatively new procedure where cells are harvested from healthy cartilage. The cells are sent to a company known as Genzyme, where the cells are cultured. This multiplies the number of cells by the thousands. The cells are returned to the surgeon who performs a second operation to place the cells in the defect. The hope is the new cartilage will grow inside the defective area. ACI is not for everyone. This procedure is not recommended for patients with severe arthritis or rheumatoid arthritis.
