Recreation Therapy

In recreation therapy, patients learn about adaptive techniques and equipment to resume their favorite leisure interests after discharge. Patients may also learn new activities to fill their free time. Patients can practice dealing with life in the community during excursions outside the hospital.

The recreation therapist coordinates:

  • the Community Re-Entry Program. Patients may be scheduled for excursions in the community to places such as restaurants, shopping centers, grocery stores and local attractions to practice daily living skills: money management, problem solving, mobility and how to handle architectural barriers.
  • the Pet Therapy Program. Once a week, the patients are visited by therapy pets and volunteers of this program. All sizes of dogs participate in the visits and have obedience classes and specialized training to be in the program.
  • group activities such as the horticulture (garden) group and recreational activity groups.
