Union Hospital Outpatient Therapy Services There are many medications to treat incontinence. Some prevent unwanted bladder contractions, some tighten the bladder or urethra muscles, and some relax bladder muscles. Anticholinergics or antispasm drugs relax the bladder muscles. Estrogen improves the health of tissues around the bladder that have become weakened or dried in post-menopausal women. Antibiotics are appropriate to treat incontinence caused by a urniary tract infection or an inflamed prostate. Desmopressin is the synthetic version of the antidiuretic hormone that slows the amount of urine the body makes at night. Depending on the individual, these medications can have unwanted side effects like dry mouth, vision problems or urine build-up.
