Medical Rehabilitation Center

What to Expect

Union Hospital Medical Rehabilitation exists to treat people who have physical and cognitive impairments. The purpose of rehabilitation is to help you, the patient, regain as much function as possible. This often means that you will be learning new ways to do old tasks. Both you and your family will be guided in the emotional adjustment to change. Your family will be included as a part of your physical rehabilitation.

A primary consideration in accepting and continuing a person in rehabilitation is the ability of that person to actively participate in the treatment program. Rehabilitation requires that the patient work and plan with the staff rather than simply be cared for. Therefore, a patient must be capable of active participation and be willing to participate before he or she can be accepted and/or continued in the program.

Rehabilitation is a day-long effort. For example, you will be taught new techniques for bathing, dressing and eating, if these self-care problems exist. Exercises and practice sessions to improve strength, balance, coordination and movement are part of the daily routine. For patients with communication problems such as hearing, speech, language and voice disorders, evaluation and therapy will be provided. If there are difficult medical problems, they will be treated using all the modern techniques and services of the Union Hospital Health Group. Your family will be taught how to help you perform all activities and health care practices.

A note to families: You and your family member are the most important part of the rehabilitation process. If it were not for your involvement in your family member's recovery, we, the rehabilitation staff, would be able to accomplish only a small part of the task at hand.
