printUNION HOSPITAL HEALTH GROUP
Keys to Hospital Quality

About the Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP):
The Healthcare Facilities Accreditation Program (HFAP) of the American Osteopathic Association has been providing medical facilities with an objective review of their services since 1945. The program is recognized nationally by the federal government, state governments, insurance carriers and managed care organizations. Union Hospital Health Group is accredited through HFAP.

It is one of only two voluntary accreditation programs in the United States authorized by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), formerly HCFA, to survey hospitals under Medicare. In addition, the program is a cost effective, user friendly means to validate the quality of care provided by a facility.

Experience:
For specialized medical surgical care, the more experience a hospital has with the necessary procedures, the better the outcome.

Range of services:
Hospitals that offer a broad range of services are better equipped to treat complex medical conditions.

UHHG physicians represent all major medical specialties. Each year, more than 1300 births, 400 cancer, 2500 cardiovascular and 1,015 orthopedic procedures are performed. UHHG physicians see more than 46,000 patients annually.

Board certification:
Physicians who are board certified have completed the amount of training that a specialty board requires and have passed difficult written and oral examinations. Board certification indicates a certain level of competence and experience.

Nursing excellence:
Nurses are a key component to the delivery of high-quality, safe patient care. The number of nurses (RN) and specialized nurses or licensed practical nurses (LPN) on staff is often a measure of quality that directly affects patient care. The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) awards a limited number of hospitals Magnet designation for nursing excellence.

Union Hospital is in the process of applying for Magnet status designation.

Research and education:
Teaching hospitals treat patients and train physicians and other health professionals. Teaching hospitals are usually associated with a medical school, giving patients access to the latest technologies and highly skilled specialists who teach at the medical school.

Union Hospital patients benefit from a close clinical tie to the Union Hospital Family Medicine Residency Training Program. Additionally, Union Hospital physicians are involved in an extensive number of cutting-edge clinical trials.

Patient satisfaction:
Many hospitals routinely use surveys to learn if patients are satisfied with their experiences. Surveys typically focus more on the personal side of care (good communication with patients, cleanliness and food quality). Please read what our patients have said in the comments section.

Union has exceeded patient satisfaction for each of the past eight years.
