printPANDEMIC INFLUENZA
Avian Infuenza

Avian influenza is an infection caused by avian influenza (flu) viruses usually found in birds. These influenza viruses occur naturally among birds which can make them sick and die. One type of bird flu, called avian influenza A (H5N1) has been known to cause infections in birds and humans.

H5N1 has caused the largest number of detected cases of death in humans. Most cases have occurred in children and young adults. Currently, the spread of H5N1 virus from human-to-human transmission has been limited and has not continued beyond one person. There is major concern that one day H5N1 will evolve and spread from person to person.
