UNION HOSPITAL

Terre Haute, whose name is French for “High Ground,” is located in Vigo County on the eastern bank of the Wabash River, centrally located about three hours from St. Louis, Chicago, Louisville and Cincinnati, and just an hour from Indianapolis. Living in Terre Haute combines the friendly atmosphere of a small city with the many advantages of a larger community.

In this county of about 105,000, you can get almost anywhere in less than 15 minutes. A variety of housing choices are available at prices well below the national average. The environment is safe and the crime rate is low. The countywide school system operates fine neighborhood schools where children have top-notch academics, excellent gifted and talented programs and vocational prep courses, as well as instruction in art, music and physical education. Eighty-five per cent of the teachers are masters- trained or better. Across the county, a diverse economy is the basis of it all.

The culture and character of the area is heavily influenced by the presence of five institutions of higher education – Indiana State University, Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, Ivy Tech State College and Indiana Business College.

The city and county park systems are outstanding, with well-equipped and beautifully maintained parks, including a nature center and Native American Museum, and a developing hiking/biking trail that ties together city and county facilities. Several county parks offer fishing, swimming and hiking. The area's many golf courses rank among the best in the Midwest in condition and affordability.

With a major regional shopping mall and many national retailers, Terre Haute is a shopper's delight. The city also offers a wide variety of dining choices, from the most popular national chains to a number of very fine local establishments offering ethnic diversity from Italian to Thai, and Japanese to Midwest home cooking.

Cultural and entertainment offerings range from theater to symphony to art museums to big-name concerts, with numerous opportunities to enjoy the arts as a participant. Big-time sporting events that draw crowds include racing and NCAA competition, and sports leagues are available for both children and adults to participate in athletics. The county historical museum displays the area's intriguing history, and an expanding science and technology museum delights children of all ages.

As a member of the Terre Haute community, you will find many ways to be active, effective and recognized. With literally hundreds of opportunities for involvement, you have the opportunity to make a difference, not just in health care but in many aspects of community life.
