Union Hospital has 3rd Lowest Heart Attack Death Rate in Indiana
Heart attacks are the leading cause of death in the United States, with 600,000 dying annually of heart disease and more than five million Americans visiting hospitals each year with chest pain. Statistics say only about 18% of those suffering a heart attack survive. Union Hospital has made significant advances in the past years and has increased chances of survival. In fact, Union Hospital has the 3rd lowest death rate from Heart Attack in the state of Indiana and 50th lowest in the nation, out of more than 4,600 hospitals. (USA Today, July 9, links below).

"Time is muscle when it comes to heart saving measures," said Dr. Ronald Leach, Union Hospital Medical Director and Emergency Department Physician. "This accomplishment validates the lifesaving measures our patients are receiving every day. We truly are saving lives."

Union Hospital is reaching its goal of significantly reducing the mortality rate of heart attack patients by focusing on teaching the public to recognize and react to the early symptoms of a possible heart attack, reducing the time it takes to receive treatment and increasing the accuracy and effectiveness of treatment.
Key areas in which Union Hospital was recognized for in its recent Chest Pain Accreditation included:
* Integrating the Emergency Department with the local emergency medical system
* Assessing, diagnosing and treating patients quickly
* Effectively treating patients with low risk for acute coronary syndrome and no assignable cause for their symptoms
* Continually seeking to improve processes and procedures
* Ensuring Chest Pain Center personnel competency and training
* Maintaining organizational structure and commitment
* Having a functional design that promotes optimal patient care
* Supporting community outreach programs that educate the public to promptly seek medical care if they display symptoms of a possible heart attack
