Technology improves healthcare

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Getting a house call from your doctor may be a thing of the past. However, new technology is taking that same idea and putting a whole new spin on it.

It's called Telemedicine, and it's quickly changing the face of treatment in the Wabash Valley. With it, doctors and nurses can treat patients in different cities.

"Patients get the care, even if they live rural in the time frame that they need it. Not when it can be delivered," Stephanie Laws of Union Hospital said.

Laws spear-headed the service getting the service in the Wabash Valley. Right now, telemedicine helps doctors treat heart and psychiatric issues.

It's a system that currently reaches out to six area hospitals many in rural communities. That helps save time and money for health care providers.

It's also beneficial to patients who can get the treatment they need in a familiar place.

Stephanie Laws will present the system nationally to Emergency Nurses Association in Boston Massachusetts.
